Celebrating 20 Years this Sunday
This month marks 20 years of ministry for Heartworks and Jubilee Academy, directed by Shandon member Sandee Hensley. You're invited to celebrate with them this Sunday, February 17 with a special anniversary program, facility tour and reception. The event starts at 3:00 p.m. at Jubilee Academy (3390 Pinebelt Road, 29204). Look for representatives under the To the City banner in the Gathering Place this Sunday!
Sandee Hensley resigned from her teaching position at W.A. Perry Middle school in 1998 to answer God's call to birth Heartworks Ministry. God used her strong relationship with student Todd McClinton and his family to fill her heart with compassion for children living in the desperate area surrounding Waites Road, just off Two Notch Road.
She used her savings to rent a house, recruited men from Shandon Baptist Church and began to remodel a safe haven to be used for afterschool and summer Bible study, tutoring, FCA and building life skills. The program grew and moved several times before God spoke Leviticus 25 into her heart following Todd's graduation from Clemson in 2005. Moms of the Heartworks children wanted them to "be like Todd." He had brought hope into the darkness!
Jubilee Academy was added in 2006 as part of the South Carolina Independent School Association. Its Christian Montessori program specifically invites children and families of generational poverty to a new lifestyle, and is also attracting economically diverse families from all areas of Columbia.
This ministry is certainly part of Shandon's legacy! Please join us in celebrating 20 years of God's work through Heartworks and Jubilee Academy, and come see what's on the horizon for the future!
